A firefighter rescued an abandoned dog left by its owner and sent it to a shelter. Last week, a Santa Monica apartment complex caught fire. When they arrived, the firefighters found a dog named Nalu unconscious and barely breathing.
Firefighter Andrew Klein told KABC: “I found him in the middle of the heat and the smoke. I picked him up and ran out.”
Before giving the dog an oxygen mask, Klein performed “mouth-to-snout” CPR. Nearly 20 minutes later, the dog began to breathe on its own. It regained consciousness and started moving. Then, the neighbors picked it up and took it to a nearby animal hospital.
Nalu, a Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu mix, couldn’t be saved when the owner Crystal Lamirande returned home and found her apartment in flames. KABC reports that, although Lamirande presumably lost everything in the fire, she has forged a new bond with her neighbor’s fire department.
“That was pretty good,” Klein told KTLA. “I’ve been involved in several similar animal rescues that didn’t result in Nalu’s story. I’ve been involved in many similar animal rescues. His return was undoubtedly a success for the team and the department.”
In ten minutes, the firefighters put out the fire without any injuries.
